The Maze Runner | Official Final Trailer [HD] | 20th Century FOX

The Maze Runner has its work cut out for it.  In a landscape dominated by YA dystopian fiction, a film like this has to stand out in order to be a success- and for the most part, it does.  Fans of James Dashner's book series who are looking for a quality adaptation will get exactly that.

The first 45 minutes of the film are perhaps the most riveting.  We start off with a bang, and several mysteries are introduced- perhaps most importantly, the mystery of the maze itself.  The cast is a standout feature of this movie, and fans of the book series will agree that the film was cast perfectly.

The mystery slows slightly as we continue into the second half of the movie, but the visual effects are outstanding.  Director Wes Ball makes his feature film debut with The Maze Runner, and he does a great job.  The gigantic walls of the maze pay homage to Wes' short film Ruin, and he does a great job keeping the plot moving forward without revealing too much of the mystery too soon.

The last 30 minutes of the film will make sense to readers of the book series, but those who haven't read it will be confused.  The end of The Maze Runner is definitely a setup for The Scorch Trials, the sequel that recently started pre-production.

Although it comes at a time when YA dystopian fiction dominates the market, The Maze Runnerdoes a good job sticking to the source material and provides a quality adaptation of James Dashner's fantastic novel.
